The bus terminal in Havířov moves the design of transport buildings forward

Designed in dialogue with an architectural landmark, the terminal incorporates real trees.

The current form of the Havířov transport terminal came about via a rather eventful journey. At the eleventh hour, residents and local architects managed to overturn the original decision to demolish the unique station building from the 1960s, and it was decided to restore it instead. That happy ending for the architectural gem then shaped everything that followed, above all our design for the new roofing and fittings of the bus station in front of the building.

The profile of the roofs harmonises in shape with the diagonal outlines of the building. The result is an organic-feeling element that also visually echoes the mature trees in the park in front of the station. The minimalist expression of trunks and branches is reinforced by the colour palette used too: white references the birch, while brownish-grey stands for the oaks.

The tree motif is key to the Havířov station. It culminates in the placement of five real trees directly on the platform. Right now the young trees are still small, but one day they will grow up through openings prepared for them in the roofing, so that passengers will enjoy natural shade as they walk and wait beneath their crowns.

You could say we fulfilled a long-held dream — we've been trying to integrate greenery into transport infrastructure since the very beginning of our work. Sometimes in the form of green walls, as in Holešov or Michalovce in Slovakia, sometimes as an artistic element (Čelákovice).

We also see the Havířov bus terminal as a striking urban element, and we're proud to have played a part in a comprehensive project that will have a positive impact on its surroundings.
