How do you build an organisation with thousands of employees on four continents? Šimon Pánek knows the answer

He first drew attention as one of the leaders of the student movement during the Velvet Revolution. On many occasions he stood alongside Václav Havel, who saw leadership potential in him — perhaps even a successor. But Šimon Pánek chose a different path. He devoted his energy to building the humanitarian organisation Člověk v tísni, which has been helping people across the globe since 1992.

So what will he talk about? “In 30 years, we've managed to build an organisation with thousands of employees, working across four continents. I want to talk about how aid is managed, secured and monitored in crisis regions. Whether it makes sense, whether it changes anything. And maybe also about how I relax and why I never went into politics,” says Šimon Pánek.

Přímá řeč s Petrem Vavrouškou is a new format at Design Field. A former foreign correspondent for Czech Radio, now working for the Bílovice-based company Egoé, he chooses guests who are exceptional not only in their profession but also have something to say beyond it. The series was launched in February by Lucie Výborná, with further guests including Jakub Szántó, Alena Mornštajnová and Dan Bárta. Šimon Pánek is the last guest before the summer break.
