Retrospective of plaster models — form that took shape directly in the material, under the sculptors' hands.
When the shape was forming under our hands
An era when shape wasn't born on a monitor, but directly in the material. The blueprint for a product's future proportions was first shaped in a neutral white plaster model — under the hands of sculptors, or those who learned from them. This is exactly where the Egoé designers arrived while searching for the DNA of their own design work, and they named the collection of findings from the 1940s to the early 1990s Doba sádrová.
The retrospective exhibition tells the story of industrial design backwards — from the end of an era back to its sculptural roots.
The story of Doba sádrová
In the Czechoslovak context, the era is linked above all to two names — the sculptor Vincenc Makovský and his pupil Zdeněk Kovář, who, in Zlín, were at the birth of the whole discipline of form-giving. The roots go deeper still, through Jan Štursa all the way to Josef Václav Myslbek. “Through the exhibition we want to show that our design work still builds on sculptural principles,” says Egoé's chief designer Radek Hegmon.
Doba sádrová places fine and applied art side by side — not against each other. Alongside Kovář and Makovský, it also recalls other figures who pushed industrial design forward, such as Otakar Diblík or František Crhák.
The symbolic end of the era is the year 1992, when Zlín announced a public competition for street furniture on a scale unseen until then. It was won by two students of the time — one of whom is today's chief designer and owner of Egoé. “The exhibition shows where we came from and what we're building on,” concludes Radek Hegmon.
